I was doing horse agility before I even knew what it was. I never have sat on the back of my heart horse, but we have spent innumerable hours working in-hand going over the bridge that someone built for practice, weaving through cones, and going over poles. Of course, she doesn’t do that much anymore. She’s 26 and has earned her retirement. That, and I am working on getting us a place where we can work in hand.
One of the social media pages I follow introduced me to the International Horse Agility club and while I haven’t joined yet, their website has a great explanation for what horse agility is and how to get started.
Not sure what horse agility is? Think dog agility, but with horses. It can be done on, or off, lead, which is different from dog agility. The goal is to have clear, confident, consistent communication between horse and handler so that they navigate the obstacles in good order. There is no jerking on the horse, pushing, or yelling. Instead, it’s a partnership.
Why am I posting about horse agility?
Well first off, I don’t ride. And I’m excited to dive into a sport that allows me to build an even better connection with my horses as well as coming up with fun and interesting things for us to do together. I’m also going to be exploring clicker training, and I feel that the two things will go hand in hand nicely.
Looking forward to updating you in the near future.
