If you look in my backlist titles, then you’ll see the Racing into Romance series that I wrote several years ago. I’m proud of those books. I had fun writing them. And yet, for several reasons including plain old burnout and the constant drama that happens in romancelandia I drifted away from that world. Except now, I find myself sneaking romantic subplots into my stories and wondering if I can write an actual, bonafide romance novel (with some steam to it, but not too much), in the fantasy world of Radio Arcanum.
But that comes with so many questions.
Will I alienate my fantasy readers?
These days what level of steam is considered (for lack of a better analogy) mainstream like Hallmark movies and what they show on TNT rather than too explicit and needs to be relegated to HBO and Starz. I mean I’ve written it all from sweeter romances with all the closed doors to ones where the doors are wide open.
Since I also write YA in this world, albeit under a different pen name than I use for the adult works, how would that work? I’ve always told people to keep the two very separate, and even if I use completely different pen names, it’s still the same universe. Though to be fair, in my mind, the works I’ve written have all been in the same universe even when the pen names, websites, and marketing have been totally separate.
What’s a writer to do?
Finally, when will I find time? I’ll have to work it in amid the myriad of other projects and I just don’t know if i have time to add yet something else onto my plate.
What do you think? What are your thoughts on this topic? Inquiring minds want to know.
