Orains first began because I felt guilty for writing so many horses. Due to “kitten summer 2015” we ended up with quite a few cats, so there I was writing, often surrounded by cats, and thinking I need to put a cat in my books. I mean by that time I’d written about horses, unicorns, and bearded dragons. But I didn’t want a cat doing regular cat things all the time. There had to be something special about this cat, and I thought “what is the most un-cat-like place where I can put a cat?” The first answer? Water. How to put a cat in water? Make them scuba dive. And Orains was born.
Orans began with a novella, Chasing Neptune’s Cat, which is still on sale or you can get it for free when you follow my project. And for a while the novella was the only story out there. Then, I realized that there was a reason to follow up, which I decided to do in a series of short stories. Some of the short stories turned into novellas and before I knew it I had a complete book-length work.
The idea to apply for The Book Bazaar came about the time I was working on the first few short stories. I had them written and knew I’d be writing a short story a month, initially to release either exclusively on my website or as part of my Muse Happens membership groups. And, the short stories will eventually find their way there. I didn’t count on having a very rough summer with my health and the heat, but the writing continued. I was accepted into the Book Bazaar and now Orains’s story so far is complete.
But there’s more to come.
Next month I start on the story (novella or novel length, it will tell me as I write) that takes place immediately after the events of Becoming Neptune’s Cat, and I have no doubt there will be more stories to come. I really love this feline character. I love the humans around him. And I can’t wait to expand their story and have them meet some of the other characters in my world. I hope you enjoy Orains too!
