Part of the Divine Rein Academy series:
  • Gaits of Magic

A new equestrian academy for all types of magic users and magical beings has opened up and green witch, Lizzi Mosswager received a full-ride scholarship. She arrives with her Appendix Quarter Horse, Sunny, hoping to compete in western and English dressage. Meeting her new roommate, Corbie, an animal mage with an affinity for birds, isn’t difficult enough, because soon she’s thrust into a world where her fellow students are from powerful families or even descended from gods.

When she stops some illicit magic use from causing problems in the cafeteria, her instructors put her, and other students, in the impossible position of looking for unsanctioned magic. And when the culprit is discovered, it’s none other than the daughter of one of the school’s biggest benefactors who thinks she can get away with anything, including framing Lizzi’s roommate.

Will the truth come out and when it does, will it cost Lizzi and Corbie their places at the school?

Morgan isn’t happy where she boards. She doesn’t ride her mare, who is pasture sound after her racing career, and between not being able to do groundwork and the barn cliques who look down on those who don’t ride, her boarding barn just isn’t a good fit. She’s been thinking about purchasing her own place where she can keep her horse, Desi. When Desi turns up lame, Morgan knows it is time to get serious. Her friend shares a real estate listing for a farm for sale not far from the rescue they both run together, and it seems like fate has intervened. Once Morgan owns the property, the true extent of the property’s disrepair comes to light, and she fears she’s gotten in over her head. For her mare, Desi, she’ll do whatever it takes to bring her home, and so she’ll have to trust that the heart guides the way.

In this prequel to Songs & Horns, Olivia struggles to come to terms with her agency leaving her for dead while protecting the unicorns and the magical node in her forest. A disturbing discovery leads her to the National Forest adjacent her property and an introduction to a very old and very powerful magical creature. But once awakened, some things prefer to be left alone and answers are hard to find. Note: Although this story is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone story.

Note: This book is free at most retailers (including this website). Sometimes Amazon will not have the book set as free, and while I welcome the purchase, I'd be grateful if you could report it to Amazon as free. Thank you.

Left for dead when the Great Dividing happened, Olivia Santos retreated to her small southern Ohio acreage and her horses, including her longtime companion, Lady. Her home also hides a magical node, one whose energy supports a small herd of unicorns. As their guardian, she vows to protect them at any cost.

A series of magical attacks on the node come from a rogue group within the Musimagium, one that wants to destroy the node and send the unicorns back to the magical realms from which they come--for good. Olivia refuses to let that happen and when she discovers the group is backed by her old boss—the one who left her for dead—she’s forced back into the world of Armis and the Musimagium.

They almost killed her once. Lady fears it will happen again. But Olivia has no choice and thankfully she’s not alone. Even with help, she knows if she can’t stop the attacks, she won’t live long enough to protect those she loves.

In the academies of the Musimagium there is a self-taught woman with a secret identity

Henrietta Smythe kept a low profile as an eccentric magical inventor who only used her first initial, shortening her given name to Henry when necessary. After all, women weren't admitted into the Musimagium's colleges, let alone allowed to dabble in the sciences. From her small home not far from the St. Louis rail yards, she worked with trying to pass messages using magic and the telegraph, wanting to send the signals faster and farther than they'd ever gone before, even to England where she had a friend, Edward, who indulged her scientific curiosity.

With knowledge of Henry’s work, Edward sends his friend Leo, a professor in London, to America to meet his friend Henry. They had a mutual interest in using magic to send messages, if different techniques. But during their visit "Henry" becomes sick and Leo tends to the young scientist until he must return to England, and in doing so discovers Hattie's secret.
Hattie recovers only to find Leo had to return to England and that he undoubtedly discovered her truth. She must know how Leo feels about working with a woman, because now that there's a chance he knows, she must acknowledge her feelings for him had grown rather fond. But Leo isn't the only one interested in her work and a chance offer from the Musimagium may take her away from all she's ever known and change the course of her life, including taking her away from any future with Leo.

Hattie has to make a choice and choose between everything she’s always wanted and the man she’s grown to love.

Author's note: This low to no-spice gaslamp romantasy book was previously released under a different pen name.
