I’ve finished my serial writing for September, and I have to say, I am loving the direction these stories are going. More importantly, as someone who writes mostly category length (~40K) or shorter, the fact that I get to explore a larger cast of characters and dive more deeply into their stories is exciting to me. The truth is, I love writing serial stories. (And for readers who would prefer to read the whole book, they will be released as books when this part of the story is finished. Probably in 2025.)
It’s not just the cast of characters or their stories, it’s also being able to weave my stories and my worlds together. I have a story idea–just the first few pages–that came to me from a dream. It involves a magical brotherhood of time travelers that hasn’t been written about yet. I’ve just introduced another member of the team for The Search for Apollo’s Chalice and well, I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but there are some tie-ins.
It’s not just that, though. It’s also because the stories give me ideas for the short stories I offer to my subscribers. I get to create a world that is always expanding and entwined with my other works, even if readers don’t need to read all of it to understand the interplay.
Writing serial stories also allows me to play with other ideas that I might not normally have time for. It does mean that I am not writing as much new material these days, or finishing up those in progress stories I have on the hard drive. But it allows me a chance to work on more projects without feeling as if I’m “taking forever” or won’t be able to finish everything.
