Kit Muse
In the academies of the Musimagium there is a self-taught woman with a secret identity

Henrietta Smythe kept a low profile as an eccentric magical inventor who only used her first initial, shortening her given name to Henry when necessary. After all, women weren't admitted into the Musimagium's colleges, let alone allowed to dabble in the sciences. From her small home not far from the St. Louis rail yards, she worked with trying to pass messages using magic and the telegraph, wanting to send the signals faster and farther than they'd ever gone before, even to England where she had a friend, Edward, who indulged her scientific curiosity.

With knowledge of Henry’s work, Edward sends his friend Leo, a professor in London, to America to meet his friend Henry. They had a mutual interest in using magic to send messages, if different techniques. But during their visit "Henry" becomes sick and Leo tends to the young scientist until he must return to England, and in doing so discovers Hattie's secret.
Hattie recovers only to find Leo had to return to England and that he undoubtedly discovered her truth. She must know how Leo feels about working with a woman, because now that there's a chance he knows, she must acknowledge her feelings for him had grown rather fond. But Leo isn't the only one interested in her work and a chance offer from the Musimagium may take her away from all she's ever known and change the course of her life, including taking her away from any future with Leo.

Hattie has to make a choice and choose between everything she’s always wanted and the man she’s grown to love.
